Inauguration of the red bench at the Italian Embassy in Mongolia and organisation of the event ‘Empowerment through Time: The Road to Gender Equality’

As part of International Women’s Day, the Italian Embassy in Mongolia today inaugurated the red bench at its diplomatic headquarters, a testament to the empty place left in society by a woman who was a victim of femicide. The inauguration was attended by the screenwriters of Paola Cortellesi’s film “C’è ancora domani” (There’s Still Tomorrow), Giulia Calenda and Furio Andreotti, together with the President of the Italy-Mongolia Interparliamentary Friendship Group, Hon. Undraa Agvaanluvsan. During the inauguration, Hon. Undraa recalled her country’s commitment to the fight against gender-based violence and for equal opportunities. The Italian Ambassador, Giovanna Piccarreta, recalled the recent measures on femicide and the results of the Italian G7 Presidency on women’s empowerment and the fight against gender-based violence.

On 10th March, the Embassy in Ulaanbaatar also organised a round table discussion at the Chinggis Khaan Museum Auditorium entitled “Empowerment through Time: The Road to Gender Equality”. The round table was followed by a screening of Paola Cortellesi’s film “C’è ancora domani” (There’s Still Tomorrow), with the participation of screenwriters Giulia Calenda and Furio Andreotti.

The event was opened with greetings from Italian Ambassador Giovanna Piccarreta and a presentation by the Head of the Secretariat of the National Committee for Gender Equality of Mongolia, Ms Enkhbayar Tumur-Ulzii. The discussion, moderated by Prof. Begz Ankhbayar, involved prominent speakers such as the Director of the Asian Development Bank in Mongolia, Ms Shannon Cowlin, the UNDP Representative in Ulaanbaatar, Ms Matilda Dimovska, and the Head of the UNFPA Office, Mr Khalid Sharifi. Hon. Undraa Agvaanluvsan, President of the Mongolia-Italy Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group, closed the event by emphasising the importance of continuing to work towards gender equality on all fronts.

The screening of the film “C’è ancora domani” was followed by a lively question and answer session with the screenwriters, who offered food for thought on the themes of the film.

The Italian Embassy thanks all participants and speakers for their contributions and renews its commitment to promoting gender equality and, in particular, combating violence against women, in collaboration with its partners in Mongolia.
