Italy and Mongolia

Diplomatic relations between Italy and Mongolia date back to 1970. Next year (2025) will mark the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Mongolia. However, exchanges between our Countries date back well over 55 years. The Chinggis Khaan National Museum in Ulaanbaatar houses a relic from the Roman era (3rd – 2nd century BC), which shows evidences of contacts between our peoples millennia ago. The first diplomatic mission was dispatched by Pope Innocent IV in 1245. Concerned about the rapid movement of the Mongol Empire towards Europe, the Pope sent the Franciscan friar Giovanni da Pian del Carpine to the court of the then Khan with the task of delivering two papal bulls to the Khan. This occurred long before the travels of Marco Polo to the court of Great Khan Kublai.

Collaboration between Italy and Mongolia unfolds within the framework of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and its Member States, on the one hand, and Mongolia, on the other (signed in Ulaanbaatar on April 30, 2013).

Relations between Italy and Mongolia are supported by numerous agreements and instruments available at the following link:
