Congratulations to Mongolia on the centenary of road transport. The celebrations for this important anniversary took place on 18 and 19 July, during a ceremony opened by the Prime Minister, H.E. Zandanshatar Gombojav, together with the Minister of Transport and Roads, Hon. Borkhuu Delgersaikhan. The President of Mongolia, H.E. Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, sent an official message of congratulations to the delegates and employees of the sector, recalling that on 15 July 1925, the founding of the “Mongol Transport Office”, which at the time had only seven motor vehicles, marked the beginning of the nation’s motorised transport era, contributing to the country’s economic development and openness.
Road freight transport has increased from around 400,000 tonnes in 1925 to 85.2 million tonnes in 2024, more than 200 times as much.
Last year, road carriers transported approximately 65% of national freight, accounting for 88% of export transport.
Passenger service has grown from approximately 800,000 people in 1935 to 145.1 million in 2024, 180 times more.
The country’s road network now totals 112,000 kilometres.
The ceremony organised on Saturday 19 July included cultural events and traditional sports competitions, attended by the Secretary of State for Transport and Roads, Sandagdorj Batbold, and the Honourable Bat-Erdene Jadamba, former Minister of Road Transport Development of Mongolia.
