Cultural diplomacy

Italy and Mongolia hold excellent relations, based on mutual respect and shared values such as democracy, the rule of law, the protection of human rights, and multilateralism. They also share a rich historical and cultural heritage.

Cultural collaboration between Italy and Mongolia includes music, visual arts, cinematography and sports. A significant moment for Italian cultural diplomacy in Mongolia was the inauguration of the first-ever Caravaggio exhibition in May 2024, including also a section on restoration techniques, an Italian excellence. Mongolia participates with a National Pavilion in the Art Biennale in Venice, since a few years ago. In 2025, the President of the Biennale, Mr. Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, visited Mongolia, accompanied by a delegation from Biennale, marking a historic moment in bilateral cultural relations. Italy has organized several masterclasses in Mongolia in recent years (Borghese Gallery, MAXXI, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, and Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome), in the fields of music and art. In addition, Italy and Mongolia have co-organized exhibitions, such as the one dedicated to Marco Polo (Ca’ Foscari University and the Chinggis Khaan National Museum, with the support of the Italian Embassy in Ulaanbaatar and the Italian Cultural Institute). Italy has also supported the Ulaanbaatar Film Festival and promoted the screening of several Italian films between 2024 and 2025, with the participation of prominent guests, such as the screenwriters of Paola Cortellesi’s “There’s Still Tomorrow.”
