In 2025, we will celebrate the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Italy and Mongolia. Our two countries maintain excellent relations based on mutual esteem and respect, grounded in shared values such as democracy, the rule of law, human rights protection, and multilateralism.
Cultural exchanges and relations between Italy and Mongolia date back to millennia ago. The Chinggis Khaan National Museum in Ulaanbaatar houses a relic from the Roman era (3rd – 2nd century BC) that testifies to contacts between our peoples dating back to that time. Giovanni da Pian del Carpine and Marco Polo provide further evidence of important interactions, dating back to the 13th – 14th centuries.
Cultural collaboration between Italy and Mongolia spans from music to visual arts, cinematography, and sport. A landmark moment in Italian cultural diplomacy in Mongolia was the May 2024 inauguration of the first Caravaggio exhibition, ever organized in the country, focused also on restoration, showcasing Italian excellence in this field.
Thanks to the complementarity of our economic systems, Italy and Mongolia maintain robust trade in numerous sectors such as cashmere (with Italy as the second largest importer), as well as construction, energy, and collaboration in scientific and technological fields, including industrial machinery. Education and academic exchanges are also significant areas of cooperation.
