Italian archaeological mission in Kharkhorin

MISSIONE
A mission from Centro Scavi Torino (CRAST), led by Prof. Roberta Menegazzi, is currently taking place in Kharakhorin (Mongolia). The archeological mission, supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation since 2018, focuses on studying the historical and archaeological heritage of the Kharakhorin area (ancient Karakorum, capital of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century). Since 2023, in partnership with the Karakorum Museum and the National University of Mongolia, the mission has carried out a topographic survey of the Bayangolyn Valley, an area rich in archaeological evidence related to various periods of Mongolian history.
Ambassador Giovanna Piccarreta visited the site and the Karakorum Museum on July 22, met with the representatives of CRAST, with the Museum Director, Mr. Bayaraa Terbish, and with Professor Erdenebat Ulanbayar (National University of Mongolia), co-director of research in the Bayangolyn Valley.
